On your next walk, keep an eye out for a vibrant s On your next walk, keep an eye out for a vibrant splash of yellow among the green. That's our native Swamp Dodder (Cuscuta gronovii)!

This fascinating parasitic vine is a vital part of our wetland habitats. Without the ability to produce its own chlorophyll, it has a unique survival strategy: it grows a special root-like structure called a haustorium to penetrate its host plant and steal the vital nutrients it needs to thrive.

Despite its parasitic nature, dodder isn't considered harmful to most healthy plants in our ecosystem. In fact, many native insects and wildlife depend on it! It's a striking example of the complex and incredible relationships found right here in nature.
