NATURE CENTER NEWSLETTER, APRIL 2013

NATURALIST'S NOTES:

Spring is finally here! While this winter won’t go down as one of the most brutal, it wasn’t a walk in the park, either. Variability of the severity of winter sometimes seems like a big deal to us humans, even though we can easily adapt as conditions change. Thermostats control the temperature of our homes, weather reports dictate how we dress, and the food just keeps on coming.

Out in nature, it’s a different story. Heavy snow and extreme cold can be life threatening to many animals. Warm spells that trick plants into flowering followed by cold snaps and low temperatures, can prevent reproduction for an entire season. Because of meager or poor food supplies, many animals teeter on the brink of starvation. Now that April is upon us, the potential for life-altering weather is still here in the form of spring nor-easters. But those creatures that have made it this far and survived another winter, will have nine months to recharge, reproduce, and do it all again!
