Naturalist Notes: April, 2017

The Winter of 2017 was pretty mild, but it ended with some serious snow. Everyone knows that “April showers bring May flowers”, but March snow-melt is just as important and doesn’t get its own catchy jingle. Nothing saturates the soil and prepares for Spring like slowly melting snow. All too often, heavy Spring rains don’t soak in and cause problems like soil erosion and the transportation of recently applied fertilizer. After several consecutive years of dry Spring seasons, I will welcome precipitation in any form- but ending Winter with snow on the ground is like having money in the bank. If April showers come, and they combine with our March snow and some warm sunshine, we will hopefully experience an epic spring bloom.
